Leighton T. Roslyn, B.A., LL.B

Since 1982, Leighton T. Roslyn has been extremely active with the International Federation of L'Arche. L'Arche provides homes for developmentally handicapped adults based on a community living model where the assistants live in with the handicapped individuals. The movement was founded by Jean Vanier, a Canadian, in France approximately over 35 years ago. In 1982, Mr.Roslyn was a founding board member of the Sudbury community and later served 5 years as President of the Board. The community has expanded from 1 home in 1983 to 3 homes to-day, together with a vocational placement program integrating members into main stream work-place employment. While Mr.Roslyn remained active on the local board, he also served on the Ontario Association of L'Arche, now L’Arche Ontario and as founding member and second President of the North American Association of L'Arche for a three year term ending in 1995. Thereafter, Mr.Roslyn remained active as Past-president of L'Arche Canada and as a member of the Legal Affairs Committee. His L’Arche involvement has resulted in extensive experience negotiating and drafting by-laws, constitutional documents and agreements both national and international in scope.

The experience of sitting on the steering committee for the formation of the North American Association was profoundly rewarding. Over a 3 year period, Leighton T. Roslyn was part of a team that helped move 43 communities from all over North American with divergent cultures, backgrounds, languages, educational foundations and outlooks towards a union which ensures the support structure necessary to the continued health of L'Arche in North America. Mr.Roslyn's legal background no doubt was helpful in the exercise, but his volunteer experience also has helped his legal perspectives and abilities.
